This Short film "Wasp" was so hard to watch. Not because it was poorly done, but because it felt so real. It felt like I was watching a real life story unfold and that was excellent on the part of the production crew. The ability to capture despair, hopelessness, turmoil, etc. was what made watching this, honestly, quite uncomfortable. Especially towards the end, the last time she goes to check on her kids. At that moment I figured out what was going to happen and it was bothersome to say the least. All I really can say is, thank you Andrea Arnold for that half hour of bad parenting and uncomfortable sequences of what it means to be unhappy, as well as, what it means to truly be in hard times.
Dillon Owen: "Wasp" was simply troublesome. I didn't like the shakiness of the camera. I'm sure they were going for a more realistic feel to captivate the viewer but I feel that could've been easily done without the shakiness. To me, a story that can bring out any type of emotion is a good story. "Wasp" made me feel angry for the majority of the film for the mother's parenting skills. But, that is the life we live in and it was portrayed very well. The sound effects kind of threw me off. The baby's crying doesn't match it's actions in some parts. Overall, it was a pretty good short .
Will Wendel: This short is very touching. Its truly deep and really makes you think about the everyday struggles that people deal with that we dont have to deal with. David kept thinking that she was being sketchy for every reason under the sun until he finally realized at the end what was going on. This is a family that only has each other and also needed a father. The mom couldnt do it all on her own and everyone has their breaking point. The film was shot very well and the narrative was great. There were a lot of little things in this film that made it great.
That was insanely hard to watch. Both content wise and the shaking of the camera. I say the best part about this film was the script, with the acting falling shortly after.
Hannah Altman: The overall message of the film was touching and really allowed me to feel for the mother. I felt like I was experiencing her life by the way it was filmed. It really put the viewer in the woman's shoes. I was not a big fan on how it was filmed though, the shakeness of the camera made it difficult to watch, although it did allow me to feel what she was going though, I think this aspect could have been done without the camera shaking constantly. The overall story of the film was touching; watching a poor single mother deal with the challenges of life while taking care of her kids is difficult, but leaving them alone outside the bar was a terrible idea and represented bad parenting skills. It goes to show that the struggle is real and challenges like this still happen today. Overall the message of the film was good, but the filming techniques used could have been better making it more pleasant to watch.
Some parts were hard to watch because of the story line and its content, but also because of camera issues that seemed unnatural. I feel like the camera angles and placement of characters could have been framed better, but other than technical issues, I enjoyed the rawness and unfortunate reality of the story.
I hate saying what everyones else has been saying, but this was hard to watch. I saw they shot it like that to give it that dry look. The gritty desert feel, but I still feel as if it could have been shot in higher quality. The story was very touching though.

ReplyDeleteWasnt a huge fan of how this was shot. I enjoyed the story though. I liked the simplicity of it. Mama should have been watching her kids!
